eventide restaurant

you may remember the blizzard of december 19, 2009? businesses were closed, lots of people got a few days off of work (except for moi…) and my surprise birthday dinner was postponed.

well, i’m here to tell you, it was well worth the wait.

from the outside, eventide in clarendon, virginia looks like an unassuming upscale bar. but on the side, down a hall to the back, is a staircase to the second floor dining room.

with a soaring ceiling, exposed brick, black and white chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling blue curtains, the space is almost breathtaking. and i have to say, the food is, too.

we started with oat crusted veal sweet breads and seared diver scallops. sweet breads are something neither of us had ever tried, but thought this would be the time to do it. in a sweet-tangy sauce, they had a crispy outside and a smooth, meaty finish. the scallops, served with crispy fingerling potatoes, buttered leeks and blood orange gastrique, were perfectly done and perfectly seasoned.

but before the appetizers even arrived, we were offered an amuse bouche from the chef – a small mushroom croquette in a truffle cream. heaven in one bite.

for entrees, he had red wine braised oxtail ravioli with guajillo pasta, pearl onions, root vegetable puree, rapini, cilantro and lemon.

i chose the porcini mushroom risotto with madeira wine, mascarpone cheese, roasted shallots and applewood smoked bacon, which, with those ingredients, was not surprisingly, one of the best i’ve ever had.

for dessert, we chose to share the banana “cigars” served with butterscotch semifreddo and malted milk chocolate dipping sauce.

the only weak link in the dinner was the wine i chose. it wasn’t bad, per se, i just didn’t like it. and honestly, that’s my own fault for not knowing what kind of wine i like!

exceptional food, great service and totally unique atmosphere added up to a really memorable experience. we’ve already started thinking about what special occasion excuse we can come up with to go again!
